Would you like to be part of an innovative project to create a Community & Arts Space in Ballybay?

We are a local group of volunteers, taking part in a free training programme and Design Thinking Challenge as part of a wider programme called Innovating Communities. We began our course in December, looking at how we could design a better future for Ballybay. We kept coming back to the lack of community and arts spaces in the centre of the town, and decided to focus on this for our challenge.

Our brief is currently: TO CREATE A MULTI-PURPOSE TOWN CENTRE COMMUNITY SPACE, WITH LONG TERM STRATEGY, THAT THE COMMUNITY MAINTAIN OWNERSHIP OF.

Current discussions include:
“Needing a Women's space, for mental health and crafts, alternative therapies”
“Kids don't have access to sports/leisure.”
“No access to space for classes-yoga etc.”
“Farmer's market would be good.”
“A heritage centre to have basic amenities.”
“There is no community centre, so it means no community”
“We have plenty ideas, but not building to host the events”
“No practical theatre or rehearsal space. Drama group currently rehearsing above a pub. Not ideal”
“An arts/exhibition space would be great. And crafts room and meeting rooms for the ICA”

To make our project happen, we hope to earmark a suitable building, and to have a vision and clear plan for this by the end of our challenge.
We have started exploring the funding processes, with advice sought from LEADER, and are discovering more about how to find grants and funds, where to apply and what information we need.

During the course, we will maximise and harness this project's potential by training participants in Design Thinking, which is a creative problem solving process, and bringing like minded people together to examine the challenge for a Community Space in Ballybay, and to work together to come up with solutions. We are a committed team, and work together in a very dynamic way, with a strong community spirit, and we’d love for you to join us:
